“Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.”
– Mark Twain
Do you have your essential legal documents?
No? You’re not alone. Aretha didn’t have them. Prince didn’t have them. Many of us ordinary folks don’t have them.
So why do we put off getting them?
Various reasons.
- Cost. Is it worth what I will have to pay to have them drafted?
- Feeling more than mildly discomforted in an attorney’s office.
- Complicated family dynamics. I can’t decide if I should leave money to someone who has consistently mishandled money. Or I no longer have a relationship with that son or daughter.
- Not a priority. I have so many more pressing demands on my time.
- Not sure what documents I need.
If you do not have these essential documents, we strongly recommend that you get them. Here are the documents that most people need:
- Will
- Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA)
- Living Will
- Medical Power of Attorney aka Health Care Proxy
