As wealth managers, we spend much of our time helping people plan wisely for the future. When we talk about goals and objectives for the future, we typically discuss how a client wants to use their financial resources to impact the people around them.
Of course, we need to plan to take care of our own needs, but many times, a client’s main objectives are not focused on themselves.
Many times, this desire goes beyond money.
In today’s blog we will talk about some examples to consider while determining how to best leverage your resources to make the desired impact on your local community.
Exploring Inspirations for Giving to Impact Your Local Community
Our finances are certainly a needed resource to impact those around us, but especially in our local community, our time can be even more valuable to give. As we approach the holiday season, consider how you will use your resources to impact those in need that are right around the corner from all of us.
Consider a few examples as you think about how you can make an impact this holiday season. We’ve included some links below that may help you find the best fit for your giving. The links below are not endorsements; they represent a sample of local opportunities.
A Joyful Gift of Time
When I was younger, a group of families organized by one of my friend’s moms would go Christmas caroling at a local retirement community. I’ll admit that at the time this was not my favorite event but seeing the faces of residents light up when we arrived at their door made many of my grumblings go away.
If this idea appeals to you, here is a webpage from a local nonprofit that lists many of the retirement communities around Lancaster County. Some of them may have events that you can take part in.
Loaves, Fishes, and Local Impact
I know a number of local businesses who hold food drives or fundraisers for the community they live and work in. By rallying their neighbors to help others, they provide a connection that not only engages those who can help, but also provides acts of service through a community group.
Here is a link to a listing of local food banks. It may help you find the perfect opportunity for volunteer service.
Providing Shelter for Those in Need
We recently attended an event for a local ministry that provides transitional housing for those in need. This event included a matching program that furthered the dollars given that day to their campaign. Providing a match can be a great way to both give and encourage giving at the same time.
Here are a few local organizations that work with families or individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the local community for inspiration: Bridge of Hope, Good Samaritan Services, and Water Street Mission.
Dinner and Generosity
One of my friends hosts a group dinner every year at his house and provides a wonderful meal in a casual setting. It is a great time to connect with each other and be on the receiving end of warm hospitality.
The only requirement to attend is that we make a donation to two charities that he supports! This dinner is a way for him to use his gift of hospitality to further a mission he cares deeply about.
A Focused Time of Giving
Generosity isn’t limited to one time of year, but this season is a wonderful time to give back and remind us that we have been called to steward our resources for the good of others.
At Master’s, we love to hear your stories of generosity and are always ready and eager to help you fulfill them through your financial resources. Please, contact us to share your joyful giving, or with any questions you may have.
