As we turn the page on 2023 and look forward to 2024, many people take the opportunity of a new year to make changes in their lives. They formulate personal goals and create an agenda of things that they want to accomplish in the new year. This can be a very positive, motivational experience. We are big fans of setting goals!
Here is the challenge: while setting goals is easy, the difficulty lies in actually achieving them. I have written about setting goals in a previous blog post. Today, I want to pass along a few tips that, in my experience, have proven to help people achieve their goals.
- Make a Plan – This may sound simple, but many of us fail to sit down and outline the essential steps required to attain the goals we have for ourselves. Once you have set a goal for yourself, crafting a comprehensive plan is imperative. Carl Richards, a popular speaker, and influential leader in the financial industry, has expounded upon this subject in an interesting blog on this specific topic. You can find it here.
- Be Diligent – Once you have taken the time to think about the necessary steps you will need to take to achieve your goal, the hard part arrives: diligently sticking to the plan. For me, I have found it necessary to make changes to my daily routine to allocate dedicated time each day towards pursuing my goal. For example, when I was studying for my CFP® designation, I committed two hours daily to adhere to the study plan I had developed for myself.
- Be “Gritty” – For many, the first week or two of following your plan will go well. However, many of us eventually find that internal motivation will eventually wane. This is when grit becomes necessary. Grit can also be referred to as mental toughness or perseverance. Achieving lofty goals in life will be almost impossible without being able to push through the desire to stop.
- Foster Accountability – Achieving goals is very difficult without the help of close friends or family. Many individuals rely on the support of others to stay committed to their goals when internal motivation begins to wane.
